Just to sing the praises of Birmingham Libraries. I requested a copy of an inquest that took place in early 1900. I paid expecting a newspaper cutting, I got ALL the documentation of the inquest. Signed statements from witness's,doctors, police and coroners. I certainly got my £15 worth.

It just shows how important it is for public bodies to hand over documents for archiving instead of binning them.

I did a look up for an FTF member of an inquest in the 1930s at the LMA. Although the index said it wasn't accessible, the chap told me that recent legislation meant it was. All the inquests for the year were arranged by month and made sad but interesting reading.

Sadly the inquest for my gt grandfather in 1879 hasn't survived - though as s*d's law would have it the years before and after have! So I had to make to with a tiny para in the local paper, though I would have loved the full witness statements.
