  • NBI Look Up Please

I'm helping my cousin with her family research.

We're trying to confirm the parents of her great x2 grandfather John Merrett (various spellings!).

I've narrowed his birth down to two possibles - both born Shipley district West Sussex Jun qtr 1840 (although only one appears on FreeBMD) One the son of John & Phyllis and the other the son of John & Mary.

I've found John, Phyllis and baby John on the 1841 census living in Shipley. I think I've found John & Mary living in Brightling (now East Sussex), but no baby John. Could he have died, is there a record of this on the NBI?

I can only find one John Merrett born Shipley c1840 on subsequent census returns, which does suggest John & Mary's did die in infancy...

    Thanks for your help.

Not brilliant coverage of Sussex then, thanks Nell.

I did find a death on FreeBMD of a John Merritt in Westhampnett in June qtr 1841, but this is before age was recorded on the indexes and didn't really want to buy the cert :o

      Right area though...

Just as well. I'll tell you quietly because otherwise Olde Crone will start cursing.

Sssh. It was a govt project, now abandoned, to digitise all the GRO bmd indexes and ensure that all the death indexes from 1837 onwards had age of death included; that all births would have mother's maiden name included and that all marriages would have partner's surname included.

So since it was mooted then snatched away there has been much rending of garments, gnashing of teeth, etc.

No doubt they abandoned it because of the cost and secondly that the GRO's revenue will go down, because we wouldn't be ordering lots of 'wrong' certs :D
