  • British Home for Incurables

    Hello,

Martha Skillman died at the British Home for Incurables, Clapham, on the 28th Feb 1873.

I cannot find her on the 1871 census.

    She is here in 1861:

Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 872; Folio: 112; Page: 26

She was christened in February 1815 in Deddington, Oxfordshire.

    Hope someone can help...
    Thanks,

    Tom

It is very sad. It appears that it is a hospice. All the patients have the occupation of "Incurable Patient".

Her cause of death is capillary Bronchitis.

        Hi Tom!

I found this thread quite interesting as the British Home for Incurables is now, and has been for a very long time, just a stones throw from where I live!!! Although originally in Clapham it moved to Crown Lane which is just on the border of Norwood and Streatham....It's quite in an amazing building! I remember as a child being quite scared of it, I think because I realised that people went there to die! I found this very spooky!!

Hi Deb! Long time no talk :D

How are you? I wonder if the one in Clapham is still there.

Nothing at the moment. I keep looking at the George Colwood and at the John who died in the coalmine, but just can't seem to get motivated with this branch at the moment.

I actually worked as a nurse at that home way back in 1963 - the one at Crown Lane.

                      Thanks Nell

Is it a nice building Stella? Is it still a hospital or has it been made into something else?

Tom, I don't know if the building still exists, as I moved to a different part of the country 36 years ago. It was a very nice building when I worked there - not very large, and the patients were extremely well-cared for. It was in a nice area of south London too.
