  • Mary Cope 1837

    Hello all

Mary Cope was born on the 23rd of December 1837 in Tattenhall Cheshire.

She was Illegitimate and took her mothers name.

Her mother was Anne Cope, and on the birth cert it states that the informant was Thomas James Proudlove, Surgeon of Tattenhall who was also the Registrar.

Can anybody find Mary Cope on the 1841 and 51 census as i cant seem to.

Have you looked for a marriage for mum Anne between 1837 and 1841? Mary could have taken the husband's surname.

      Hey UJ

When Mary married George Colley in 1859 she married under her name Cope.

Marriage took place in Bunbury Cheshire.

Marriages often took place under correct surname - but censuses often used the resident family name, which may not be the legal name.

Alternatively - were Ann's parents still alive? Such grandchildren often turn up with their grandparents, so that mother can earn money to support self and child.

Lots of people took the surname of step-parents but reverted to their birth name at marriage.

After Mary married did she always state Tattenhall as her place of birth?

From the 1861 census to the 91 she always claimed to be born Tattenhall.
Her age only went out by 2 years and she died in 1900.

I have everything for her, birth cert, marriage cert and death cert but what i want most of all i want her on the 1841 and 51 census.

Danny, this may be just a coincidence, but an Anne Cope married one of: William Formston; William Langley; Joshua Radcliffe; or John Evison Wynn Sep 1837 Great Boughton 19 35 (from FreeBMD). Great Boughton is the reg district for Tattenhall.

Sorry, was interrupted as about to post and didn't complete the post.

Now see I have cross posted with UJ, Merry and Christine as well as yourself, so my bit was useless:o

There's a marriage in 1840 for an Anna Cope to a Thomas Brookes from Cheshirebmd.

Possible for 1841 with a Mary aged 3.

No sign of Mary with the family in 1851.

Danny, there's loads of things I've missed because I was looking too hard. That's why a fresh pair of eyes can be very helpful.

                                    Thankyou Fiona and Merry

Ive always wondered why i could never find her, i never even thought of looking for her under her possible step-fathers name.

Well now you know. I've got a brother and sister who took stepfather (my gt x 2 grandfather)'s name. One of them kept it and one changed to their former surname.
