  • Marriage cert gives no real help, can............

Somebody please help me work out the fathers name?

Ive found them on the 1851 census and it states John Ratcliffe was born Shropshire in 1822.

    Class: HO107; Piece: 2020; Folio: 373; Page: 4

Which father's name are you trying to make out? One is J Ratcliffe, deceased, and the other is D Bird.

Im trying to work out who both the father's were.

Ive not come across a marriage cert with just the initials before and no occupation.

I think some vicars in the early days of civil registration didn't really see why they needed to fill in the father's details if the couple were over 21.

Ooh, now the 1861 census is a bit more useful for birthplaces - sometimes you have to go forward before you can go backwards! John says he was born Salop Hopehey (well, that's what it looks like) and Catharine was born Warwickshire Marston (again, I think that's what it says).

On the marriage cert it looks like Catherines father might be GD, what do you think?

The IGI has a John Radcliff baptised at Hopesay, Shropshire, 16 May 1823, parents Joshua Radcliff and Hannah.

Danny...I thought GD as well, but if you look under Wolverhampton there is another D for Ditto. Looks like the same letter for Mr Bird.

Danny... It could be worse... I have a cert from the early days of registration and under both Father's names it just says "DEAD". No initial or anything.

Luckily for me it was a distinct name that I was tracing forwards and not going back along that line.

                          Remembering: Cuthbert Gregory 1889 - 1916, George Arnold Connelly 1886 - 1917, Thomas Lowe Davenport 1890 - 1917, Roland Davenport Farmer 1885 - 1916, William Davenport Sheffield 1879 - 1915, Cuthbert Gregory 1918 - 1944
