Step-son and step-daughter

Hello

I have on the 1861 England census John Seddon (head) and his wife Elizabeth.

Class: RG9; Piece: 2773; Folio: 98; Page: 33

They have 3 kids and 2 step kids.

After a closer inspection Martha is actually Reeves and not Keever and William is not Carlough as he does not show up anywhere else with that name.

I went back a census and found that John Seddon was married to a lady named Margaret (who is actually my GGGG-Grandmother)

Now my question is how exactly are the 2 step-kids related to the Seddons.
What exactly is the link?

The last one is Cartwright.

I would have expected them to be Elizabeth's children from before this marriage. Either she's been married twice before or the first child was given her maiden name. Of course this might be a load of **** but that's what i would be looking for first!

So Elizabeths maiden name was actually.......... and she married a Reeves and then he may have died and she married a Cartwright and then he may have died and she married John Seddon.

So Johns prevoius wife Margaret must have died sometime between 1851 and 1861.

Nearly. There was no Mr Reeves - Martha's mum was unmarried when Martha was born!

So in 1871 the three Seddon children are all Margaret's (unless there was some funny business going on!) and the other two are both Elizabeth's.

Ahhhh so Martha was illegitimate and then her mum married Robert Cartwright in 1852 but Martha kept her mother's maiden name and then Elizabeth had a son with Cartwright and then Cartwright died in 1855/6.

Then in 1858 she married my rellie John Seddon.

And Margaret looks like she died in 1855.

So i should be able to find John's marriage to Margaret as they would have married c1847/8

There's at least two possibles!!

Margaret Green or Margaret Moon. I know which one I would prefer, so it's probably Margaret Green your chap married!! lolol :D

Lol, i reckon its Green aswell, however Moon sounds like an intresting name.

I should get a birth cert for one of the kids then and see if its Green or Moon.

Merry would it help work out which Margaret it was by her birthplace.

I.E either Green or Moon born c1827 in Dalton Lancashire.

It would, but you only have the 1841 to work with censuswise, so you would have to rely on any available bap records.

Ive just checked Lancs bmd and i cant find a marriage between a John Seddon and a Margaret Moon.
I can find the Margaret Green one though.

lol! I didn't think of Lancs BMD. Marg Moon married Edward Waring!

So its almost certain to be Green then.
