  • Just need some advice

I have a rellie who left the family home sometime during or just before the first world war and was never seen again.
My family have heard snippets of him staying in America and then dying in the second world war in the navy.

Problem is he was Irish and i dont know how to go about tracking him down.

    Should i use a researcher?

From the other "researcher" thread, I doubt whether a professional researcher could get much further than the combined brains on this forum. It could also cost the earth because there are still so many possibilities. He could be impossible to trace, epecially if he changed his name or other details. The US census up to 1930 is on Ancestry World Edition.

        hi Dan,

if it were me I would begin with what you know, stick his name and dob etc into ancestry and see what happens..

try "findmypast" they have passenger lists I think but not sure as to what dates...

he might have some army service records if he went stateside.

I would think his death cert would be the first thing to get.

I have no idea how you would get a death cert from USA, but I am sure someone on here can tell you.

Presuming he DID die in USA that is,

I'd still have a butchers at Ancestry first though.

                    Hey OC

I was told he died in WW2 but im unsure of the date or whether he was in the united states navy or the british navy.

I was just emailed by my cousin and said that a while back my other cousin unearthed some extra info on him.
He's due to email in the week with the info.

There are some US WWI and WWII records on Ancestry:

If he was in the British forces he should be on the CWGC site:

                          Hey mary

Ive checked the CWGC and that came up blank.

I havent had much luck with Ancestry but still loads to search.

If you click on the link in post 11, it takes you to databases of draft cards and such like. I think you'll need the World Ancestry sub to search them.
