  • Christian name Perpey

Does anyone know what "Perpey" could be an abbreviation of, please?

The surname was Percey - it would be a bit odd to be christened "Perpey Percey"! I suppose be a sort of nickname, based on her surname but I met her a few times and she just didn't seem to be the sort of person who would use a frivolous nickname.

Where have you got this from? Someone you know personally? When was she born? There are quite a few dignified people around still carrying the nicknames given them in childhood, however inappropriate now.

I know a Rosemary who is called "Romy" because that's how she pronounced her name when she was 2. She's in her 40s. And I also know a mum still called Bubs (derived from Baby!).

Alternatively, the only name I can think of at the moment that Perpey could be short for is Persephone, which is classical. Or maybe Perdita?

Or maybe it's Purpy because purple was her favourite colour! Who knows with nicknames!

Or perhaps Perpey is how she pronounced Percey when she was younger?

        It could be, Nell

There were two sisters, Perpey and Nell (yes!) and they just somehow always seemed so prim and proper - but yes that could well be the case

I know a girl called Perthia,

She hated her name so was always known as Perth. Over the years it has been lengthened and now she still gets called Perthi..

Thanks Light - I shall look for that

From having rummaged where I shouldn't have been rummaging (again - LOL), I think the Perceys had some knowledge about why my mother was taken to France to be kept in hiding from a certain HW Wicks.

I think also that the Perceys had some connection with the Tate & Lyle Sugar Company.

As usual. my threads are getting inter-mingled - sorry

              Thanks again Light

The Doctor in Dr Who used to have a companion whose full name was Perpignan but I think she was called Perry for short? Anyway, I doubt if Perpignan is often used as a first name.

Could it be a "Biblical" name like Prudence or Purity?

I know a lady who uses the first name Vinnie, I wordered what that was a pet form of - I know it wont apply in this case, but it transpires her maiden name was Vincent - and Vinnie was her nickname at school - and it stuck. Her name is actually Susanne
