  • Workhouse census 1851

    The Sussex Family History informs me of this entry:
    Albert Petett Date 1851 PETTIT
    Ann Petett Date 1851 PETTIT
    Pearce Petett Date 1851 PETTIT
    Entry Battle, East Sussex, Workhouse Census 1851, p2. ;
    Pearce Petett, age 10, pauper scholar, birthplace Ashburnham. ;
    Ann Petett, age 12, pauper scholar, birthplace Ashburnham, ;
    Albert Petett, age 5, pauper scholar, birthplace Ashburnham.

    I have parish records of their baptisms for Anne, Pierce & Albert Pettit.
    Albert has the note- ballborn son of Mary Pettit widow
    (As husband died 6 years before his birth & I have death cert)

    ?Is ballborn the same as baseborn???

    ?As they were listed in the Workhouse census for 1851 (according to the above entry), why can't I find them on Ancestry?

    Never heard of ballborn; I would suspect that the original said baseborn but wasn't very clearly written. As for why you can't find them on ancestry, presumably either they are mistranscribed or ancestry hasn't got that page for some reason... I'll see if I can spot them...

      Thanks Kiterunner!

      Pettitt spelling has many variations! As well as their first name differences ...

        Very slightly mistranscribed on ancestry.

        Do a search for Teasn Fatatt born 1841

          Try searching for "Teasn Fatatt", Albert Fatatt and Ann Fatatt and you will see them!

          (Oh, you got there first, Elaine. I wasted my time browsing through to try to find the workhouse first)

              I did a search on the 1851 census for a male person (no name entered), born 1841 Ashburnham, living in Sussex - then glanced through the names for an oddity!

              It is possible that Kate found the Workhouse census return, and then searched through the pages for an obvious entry - that would have been my next move if the first option hadn't turned anything up.

                Just searched for anyone living in Sussex and born in Ashburnham in 1841, without putting in a name, then looked through the list for an obvious mistranscription of Petitt.

                  Thank you, I now have another trick to try on some of my 'unfindables'

                    I browsed to Battle but the last district listed for Battle wasn't the workhouse and I couldn't see a district name for Battle workhouse so I gave up on trying to do it that way.
