    Hello everybody

I recieved one of my certs from the GRO yesterday and im trying to work out who lived at number 4 Oat street Higher Hillgate Stockport in 1901.

    Can anybody suggest any ideas?

It looks like it is now a pub.

I can think of three possible ways - and it depends on how urgent it is, and how determined you are...
    1. wait until FMP has more than just a couple of counties - and, in particular does have cheshire
    2. use the 1901 site (is that part of GR now?) - that has an address search
    3. use the Ancestry 1901, and trawl through the District descriptions until you find one that includes Higher Hillgate / Oat Street, and then trawl through that set of pages

Researching: BENNETT (Leics/Birmingham-ish) - incl. Leonard BENNETT in Detroit & Florida ; WARR/WOR, STRATFORD & GARDNER/GARNAR (Oxon); CHRISTMAS, RUSSELL, PAFOOT/PAFFORD (Hants); BIGWOOD, HAYLER/HAILOR (Sussex); LANCASTER (Beds, Berks, Wilts) - plus - COCKS (Spitalfields, Liverpool, Plymouth); RUSE/ROWSE, TREMEER, WADLIN(G)/WADLETON (Devonport, E Cornwall); GOULD (S Devon); CHAPMAN, HALL/HOLE, HORN (N Devon); BARRON, SCANTLEBURY (Mevagissey)...

I looked on TNA 1901 and Oat St only has four numbers :(

I looked on multi-map and Oat St is a cul-de-sac off Charles St.

I have found a Daniel Nield in the Historic Online Directories living in Charles St, Stockport, and he is there in 1901.

If you go from there you might find it!

Hmmmmm just odd numbers for Charles St in District 40.....I suppose Oat St was bound to be on the even side!

Looking at the description for D 39/41

He lived there in 1907 so im not 100% he lived there in 1901 im just hoping.

Was he a bachelor when he married?

Grim, James would have been 23 in 1901 and he was unmarried so i will check ancestry and see if i can locate him.

Just what i was told by my grandad but he could be very wrong (by the looks of it)

I found his wife on the census and she was bornin Knutsford.
She was living in Stockport on the 1891 census.

Might this be one of their children?

Rather a long time after the 1911 census to risk £7 and then £45!!

If you live near enough to Stockport and a big library or the County Record Office for stockport then you can look at the poll books or Kellys or other Trade Directories for that address and plot the family that lived there backwards and forwards until they disappear. If you live near London then the Guildhall Library has the most complete set of Kellys for the whole country. Some are missing and of course if he did not have a business or was not affluent enough to be in the residential part of the directory, then the Directories will not help you, but the poll books might if he was one of the 80% that usually voted at this time. Over 21 was voting age at this time.
