This is George and he has been on here before, but it was quite a while ago and I've very cleverly lost whatever notes I had :o

Apologies ..... could we start again please

      Oh he's gorgeous Rachel:D

      I'd say about 1920.

I've always found it interesting that when men's hair had a parting it always had to be on the left

        Thanks Cherry
        He's not bad is he .... great grandfather (1858 - 1920)

Men's clothing is always so difficult as it hardly ever seems to change and there's not much showing in this pic.

and idea on his age ?

            Thanks Brenda ...
Very possibly painted for his 21st then
It must have been for a special occasion I would have thought

Well I was way out there Rachel thinking it was about 1920! George certainly looks under 40 in the pic, maybe 35? which would put it round about 1893.

I love the dimple in his chin, that's supposed to denote great, ahem, sexual magnetism:o

Phoar George you were certainly one good looking chappie ;)

Being serious, you're quite right about men's clothes, they didn't seem to change overmuch for many years. I'm intrigued about the necktie, not quite a tie and not quite a bow tie, more like a kind of rouleau. The glint on his jacket suggests that it was velvet and the whole picture would suggest that it was some kind of special occasion

:D I'm useless at guessing ages but he does look older than 21, although as it's a painting who knows how accurate it is ....
There's a fair amount of detail in the face but the jacket, collar and tie do seem to be a bit slapdash ... and his right eye certainly looks a bit odd !

The only other pic of him I have is a photograph which I think is abt 1919 and he's sucking a pipe, so you can't really get a good idea of his features.

Yes I think it's a velvet jacket aswell

Can't think of anything that happened in 1893 ... he married in 1884

                Still thinking

I've always thought his hair looks like Terry Wogan's wig :(

Just wondering, has he been wearing a hat

That's interesting ... will have a closer look

The avatar is mum when she was 20 ish but George is father's father's father

No connection between the families anywhere in the past ..... maybe dad's unconscious mind spotted something familiar in mum ?

Grandpa looks like he's wearing a bow tie from the 1880ish period, the rest is hard to tell, the dark colour of his coat suggests he is wearing a frock coat. He looks 20 to 25......;)
