I have come across a person in a tree I am researching in Tarleton(Lancs.)Militia Book 1826.
Richard Twist- lab.- 26- 2children under 14-exempt-poor man.
further down I found his brothers,Thomas 28 and Robert 25 who were not exempt and were inmates.Inmates of what? Tarleton was not a large town and I cannot find a mention of a workhouse there. How can I find out more?

According to GENUKI: Tarleton, Lancashire genealogy

Tarleton had a "school of industry" so that might be the institution.

Even a very small town would have had a poorhouse although this might only have been a very small place.

I live near Helston in Cornwall and the old pre-Union Poor Law house still stands in the main street. It has only four rooms and had only five or six inmates at the most at any one time.

It may be the same thing in Tarleton.

Theres quite a lot of info on this site.

Hesketh Bank and Tarleton Village History

It might be worth e mailing them as there seems to be a few historians on there.
