  • Yet another will question.

    Well, two questions, actually. LOL.

Anyone know what "three bloom smiddyes" is???
It goes..."the lease of Hawkshead Church and three bloom smiddyes with all the ore which I have in Mithland and Low Furness"
    Presuming mines???

    Next one....

What is the difference between executors and supervisors?

"I constitute my sons, William, Christopher, Miles and Anthony my executors, and John Preston, Edward Sandys, William Dixon, Miles Dixon, Thomas Benson, Richard Mackereith, William Sawrey, Miles Sawrey and Richard Sandys all of Lancaster as supervisors"

Would the supervisors make sure the executors do their job???

Seemed to be a heck of a lot of supervisors.

I don't know what sort of date your talking about but there is a bit here about the roles of executors and supervisors

          OriginsNetwork - Resources - Collections

Its quite a way down the page (about the 6th paragraph from the bottom)

Basically you were right about supervisors (or overseers) checking that the executors did their job properly

Blooms were produced from smelting iron ore. They would then be hit with big hammers to remove the impurities.

Thank you, Oh, I have soooooo much to learn.

Jackie....I'll read that as soon as I get OH off to work LOL. Seemed like a lot of supervisors for a will.

The date was 1554 (from memory, but def 1550s)
