  • Am i right in thinking..............

That this is the best bet for my family?

Right, i have Charles Robert Kelly born 1838 scotland living in Hoole Cheshire on the 1901 census with a daughter named Elizabeth Ann Johnston Kelly and two more kids.

    Charles is a Landscape Gardener.

Anyway i followed him back through the England census and im positive i have him on all of them untill he starts in Scotland.

I searched on the 1851 Scotland census and have found a very likely Charles.R.Kelly aged 15 living with his father James and a woman named Ann Johnstone who is down as sister-in-law.

    Parish: Closeburn; ED:1; Line:4; year: 1851.

As he later on name's one of his daughter's Elizabeth Ann Johnston i figured that this looks to be the right family.

Also on the 1861 Scotland census the only possible Charles Kelly i can find is a Charles living in Berwickshire in a Garden lodge and is a Gardener.

Parish: Lauder; ED: 1; Line: 3; Year: 1861.

Anybody agree the first family is my best bet aswell as my 1861 Charles?

    Looks very reasonable!

Is that his marriage in 1864 at Lauder, Berwick? You could confirm parents names with the Scotland People entry.

      Hey Merry

If the marriage is between a Helen (Ellen) Allan then thats the right marriage

It does all sound likely, but you would be best to get the marriage certificate to check - Johnstone is a very common name in Scotland.
