  • One for Don please

I believe this is my Irish Grandad. I know he fought in WW1 (Inniskillen Fus.) and he was also a 'B Special' after the war. Can you help?

Yes, I think so - but then it seems weird saying that about your own Grandad lol

Mary I had a relative in the fusiliers, Company Sargeant Robert Hamilton. But as another with prod' ancestry, I think thats a B Special uniform

Yes, I think so too. That's what my Dad told me the uniform was not many years ago. He actually kept it quiet for most of my life that Grandad was a 'special'. Couldn't get my head round that for a while!

But it would be nice to have confirmation.

Hi Rachel, I'm fairly sure he's a Special, but that's from memory, I don't have any pictures.

                        Thanks Rachel,
I do have photos of him when he was in the Inniskillen Fus. and that uniform is not at all like this one.

                                Mary,
Your dad probably kept quiet about his father being a B special for fear of retribution. I think they were protestants and loyal to the crown and therefore not liked by the catholics.

Glad all that seems to be over

                                  Pam,
                                  You're probably right.
He didn't tell me until I was in my 40's and Grandad was long dead. And yes, he most certainly was loyal to the Crown.

He just blurted it out one day, I'll never forget. Then he looked horrified and changed the subject.

The uniform is much too dark for khaki. He is not wearing Army leggings either. The cap badge is clearly an Irish Harp

yes I agree about the colour - I should imagine it's a dark blue, though I'm not sure.

Good morning Mary, (or in your case is it 'evening Mary ),

Don't know how I missed this one but I would agree with all that has been said so far on that this being a "B" uniform. Styled on the British army uniform the collar dogs show the Irish Harp with a crown surmounting it (if this were an army uniform it would date after 1924 as this was when collar dogs where reintroduced to be worn with the new style uniform), the leather belt with its S shaped buckle is of the 1914 leather pattern which was issued (British army issue) to the "Kitchener Battalions" as emergency equipment, and as Paul has already said, lack of puttees would make this a non army uniform (other than the colour of course).
