  • Can anyone date this please?

It was included in an album that we got from my late Grandad in Ireland.

    Thanks!

Hi Mary, the trouble with photos like this is they are very hard to date, that little girl could be from a big part of the 2oth century. Do you have other photos from the album? we could possibly work out a date range to give us a clue......

      Hi,
      Thanks,
The other photos in the album were mostly of my Granddad in uniform during and after the first world war and some 1920's stuff. Not much help!

I wonder could she be 20s? If Don is about it would be good to get his opinion as he is very knowledgeable, I keep looking at the table and the pot the plant is in, they both look early 20th century. I have to go now but I will keep looking to see if I can help.

I was wondering if the pic's reversed, because her buttons do up the wrong side and she's wearing a ring on her 'ring finger' ... but the 'V 4 H' on the aspidistra pot look right

maybe her dress was made from a man's shirt ?

Yes, her dress does look a bit shirtish?!

I was hoping someone could date the table - I'm not very up on that kind of thing - though going by the other photos in the album, the '20's could fit.

I know she's part of my family as she could be my twin - by nobody in my family that's still alive has any idea who she is.

            Thanks!

Well l could be way out here. But l reckon she is about 12 years of age and the photo taken around the 50's . I remember wearing necklaces like that, and rings. The style of dress also looks familiar to me ;)

                Pam,
I think you're correct with being about 12.

I'm wondering if the dress is just going to prove to hard to date!

I was looking at 'shirtwaisters' .... (that style of dress) but could not find anything matching that particular style in any era

The collar is quite large and floppy and I would have thought that 1950s collars were all neat and small (after the war, so skimping on material)

But maybe Ireland had its own fashion code

Don't you just want to give her hair a comb ? ... odd that it's not tidied for the photo

                    Rachel,
Shirtwaisters - so that's what they are called!

Yes, I wondered why they had gone to all the bother (and expense) of having a professional photo made and then not combing her hair!

Interesting point about the collar, but yes, I guess styles etc could have been different in Ireland.

                    Thanks

Silly question, but is it possible to get at the back of the pic without doing damage, to see if there are any clues ?

it may not be a professional photograph

                        Rachel,
The back is a postcard, if you know what I mean?

Don't know if that helps to date it?

Mary are you able to scan the back and put it on here ? .... there could be some clues

I think if there's a line down the middle it dates from ? 1904 or something like that ...

Don't think it's shows up to well.

It says Postcard along the top in big letters. Under that in small letters, says British Made.
                              Then a double horizontal line.

Down the middle there is a vertical line.
Says Correspondence on the left and Address on the right.

If she is a post card she is early bless her. Sounds like she fits in with the rest of the pictures in the album. Also might explain her cameo brooch at the neck, not something I would have thought she would have worn if she was from the 50s.

Yes, I agree about the brooch.

And yes, all the other photos are early.
It's just the dress is so odd for that era.
