your grandfather - your mother - you
        grandfather's brother - mother's cousin - your 2nd cousin

Your relationship to your mother's cousin is 1st cousin once removed. Same applies to your mother's relationship to your 2nd cousin. If you and 2nd cousin have children they will be 3rd cousins.

was that just for the table at the bottom, or was I supposed to read the whole lot?

anyway thanks for the info all. so roughly how much of our DNA would be the same?

You would share about one-eighth of your DNA - that is to say, one eighth of your DNA comes from the common source of your great grandparents.

(But DNA is much more complicated than that!)

You might not have any DNA for some of your ancestors it is not shared out neatly like some seem to think.

Something like 98% of human DNA is shared with chimpanzees so I wouldn't get too hung up about it.

and don't forget ... the human body contains almost as much water as a cucumber ;)

(this important snippet of info was intended for Uncle John)

I should have said that you have the POTENTIAL to share a maximum of one-eighth of your DNA with your second cousin. As Guy rightly points out, you may share next to none.
