  • A little snippet of Mosfort

    Hello everyone

Right, as i can only find two Mosfort's in Cheshire on the IGI and literally nowhere else, so i tried a few sites for the surname and came up blank.
Then i tried the gale site and the first hit out of three took my attention straight away because it was from the Adam's courant (Chester) which basically stated that in the county's assizes a Thomas Mosfort was sentenced to be burnt in the hand and imprifoud (what it looks like)

This Mosfort looks to a certain as its such a rare thing to locate a Mosfort especially in Chestet. Also does anybody know what burnt in the hand mean?

What date was this, Danny? I'm guessing it means being burnt in/on the hand. Could imprifoud be imprisoned with an old-fashioned s that looks like an f?

      Hey Nell

      The date is spring 1779.

Yes the F could later be S. Ive heard of when searching earlier using one instead of the other, or something like that.

Danny, I found a newspaper report of a man who committed bigamy, and the punishment was branding. This may be what happened to your man.

            Denise

Thankyou for that, i have just recently contacted that person and have had an email or two back, he dosent seem to have got any further with the Mosfort's.

            Mary

Would my guy just have been branded for killing his son?

and imprisoned, possibly. Depends on whether it was murder or manslaughter etc.

                It was manslaughter.
It says that he was sentenced for the manslaughter of his son.

Forgive me if I am stating the **** obvious, but you HAVE looked under MosforD, haven't you?

Branding was punishiment for several crimes.

                    Hey OC

I have looked under Mosford but no obvious ones jump out at me, although Mosford does appear more times in Cheshire than Mosfort.

I did find a marriage between a William Mosfort and a Pheobe Rawlinson.

And when i searched on the Cheshire BMD for her death i could only find a death in 1850 for a Pheobe MosforD so perhaps MosforT and MosforD are often mistranscribed.
