Then in the search box - top left of screen - search for "parish registers" - should take you to the page Light has given.

                          Google "Internet Archive"

                          Internet Archive
Nonprofit organisation established to preserve Web sites by taking regular "snapshots". The Wayback Machine provides links to older versions of a webpage.

well, I'm in, and it does look potentially useful, though its going to be rather timeconsuming seeing if any of the "books" are worth while.

Tip for those of you specifically looking for Yorkshire connections... if you look at the Yorkshireparishregisters.com website,

                              Publications Parish Register Section

you can find out which volume relates to which parishes. So you don't need to download them all

Unfortunately (Murphy's law) the ones I'm interested in aren't on the website.

Apart from the parish registers, there's lots of great old books on all sorts of subjects that can be downloaded for free in PDF format. One book I had been trying to buy on Ebay/Abe books for 2-3 years but never seen a copy go for less than £250-400 as its so rare, so was well made up to find a copy there.

I've just realised that this site isn't restricted to parish registers, there are several other items of interest on there. Its "open source" ie copyright-free material, so you may find an old book you are interested in has been digitised. I've just found the 1615 Visitation of Northumberland.

forgive me if I disppear for the rest of the day...

(oops Snap Richard, you're obviously a faster typist than I am!)

                                    whoooooooooooooo whooooooooooooo

I'm a very happy bunny now, I've found another old book I've been after for a while. I wasn't going to pay silly money to buy a book just cos it was old and out of print. I want to READ it, not keep it as an investment.
