    I've suddenly got no sound:(

PC & speakers are fairly new (few months), the light is on but nothing's happening. Volume on PC is set right.

The only thing that's happened is that I had a big Windows update to install yesterday.

    Can anyone help please?

I also lost sound after an update about a month ago but it seemed ok again after I restarted the pc. Try the microsoft communities there usually someone else with the same problem.

Sorry, only just got back in from work

Hello Babs:-) Yes it is realtex - how did you get it back?

Lesley, mine hasn't come back at all but if no-one can help here I will try the microsoft communities. Thank you.

James, although it says it's unplugged if I go to Sound in Control Panel, it definitely isn't.

Hello Dave, it's an Acer Aspire and is running Vista.

Dave, I can't follow the instructions through cos when I got to Sound, my Speakers are "Not plugged in" - which they are - so no option to restore defaults.

                        In brief...

Bring up the window on the screen.

Press "Print Screen" (may be "Prt Scr") upper right of keyboard - above delete/numlock)

                        Open paint, menu>edit>paste.

                        Save file.

Upload to photobucket, etc. post link on ftf.

Dave, it might be something I'm doing wrong or it may be because I haven't got a printer at the moment but nothing's happening when I press print screen.

You don't need a printer Asa!!

Follow Daves instructions exactly and you will end up with an image which you can then put onto FTF.

When you press "Print Screen" you will not be aware of anything happening. The computer has actually copied the screen image into an invisable clipboard. When you go to Paint you can then paste this image into the program and then save it as a .jpg.

You have to be *really* simple with me ;-)

I've been through the Microsoft Help & Support pages for the Vista update/ Sound problem issue and there's nothing at all for "Speakers Not Plugged In"

Give this a try - no promises...

                                        1. Click on Start button, then right click on “Computer” and select “Manage” on the right click menu.
                                        2. Open Device Manager by clicking on “Device Manager”.
                                        3. Look for "realtek High Definition Audio Device" by expanding the hardware component categorys, by clicking on the small plus sign next to them.
                                        4. Once found, Right click on "realtek High Definition Audio Device", and select “Properties”.
                                        5. Select “Driver” tab.
                                        6. Click on the “Roll Back Driver” button, and confirm when prompted with dialog box asking if really want to procced to get old driver installed again.

May not work, but work a go. May require a reboot afterwards too.
