  • Wireless connection questions

Following my recent thread about changing to a wireless connection -

I now have a wireless router so that OH's desktop and daughter's laptop can access the internet. I had to give the guy in the shop my PlusNet username, password and a security password, along with OH's tower and daughter's laptop and he set it all up so that I just had to install the new hardware afterwards on my own desktop.

    1. How do I access the security password, or check that he put one in place for that matter, because presumably it would make sense to change it now?

    2. I no longer have an icon in my system tray to tell me the wireless connection is open and what speed it is etc. Is this normal?

    3. None of the LAN lights are on on the router but according to my system information I have a network connection
    Local Area Connection 4
    Connected
    WBR-T2 USB Remote NDIS Device
    Is this normal?

    4. As the internet connection now seems to be permanently on, am I supposed to turn the router itself off overnight, or when I leave the house etc?

Sorry if these are dumb questions!

I can't answer all of your questions, but perhaps can help with a couple.

I think the LAN lights on the router only come on with a wired connection.

I never switch our router off, its on permanently.

I do have an icon in the ststem tray, it says wireless connection and te name of the router, then the speed which is 54.0Mbps, then the signal strength and then the fact I have a connection.

As for the password, I don't know. Can you not ring and ask him how you access it?

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will help you soon.

    Just had a thought:

Why not google the make of router and see what you can find out.

      Thanks Margaret.

As there are now 3 PCs connected, I thought maybe I should be switching the router off overnight in case of thunderstorms/lightning etc?

I'll try googling the router to see if I can get an icon back in the system tray, now you've told me you have one there.

I'm trying to avoid ringing the chap at the shop as I asked him so many questions before going ahead with the purchase in the first place :o

        What make/model is your router?

Also, if you double click on the local area connection in the system tray and go to Support tab, what does it say for Default Gateway?

Hi Dave! Nice to see you again at the meet.

I think the make is G Wireless - that's the only possibility I can see on the box.

          Wireless ADSL2+Gateway Model: WBR-T2

I can't check the support tab now because I disconnected the wireless router and reconnected my old router eventually and there's no-one else here to help me drag the desk back out again just now to get at the cables again lol

I disconnected it because, although I use firefox anyway, it wouldn't let me open IE - the message said "Forbidden" - so I thought there must be something seriously wrong somewhere and I didn't know if my PC was safe.

Does that mean you are wired to the router now?

Sorry Dave - not sure I understand the question.

When I first changed to broadband from dial-up, I received a non-wireless router from PlusNet which I have used until now. I changed that for the wireless one yesterday. However, after this morning's problems, I have disconnected the wireless one and reconnected the original non-wireless one.

So that would mean that you are connected to the router via a cable.

Do you have a wireless-enabled computer near by?

Not sure what the difference is as I plugged all the bits from the back of the old router into the back of the wireless one, plus a new cable from the wireless to the mains.

OH's desktop is upstairs in the spare room. It still has the wireless USB adapter stuck in the back of it and was connecting to the internet when I last had the wireless router attached to my PC downstairs.
