  • From where did his nickname come?

My husband's grandmother 2nd marriage was to George Searle (1874-1953)

    He was known as 'Sotchel'

Has any clever person a suggestion as to why?

(His occupations were ag. lab, market gardener, hairdresser)

No. Woody Allen and Mia Farrow named one of their adopted children "Satchel" after "Satchelmouth" which was a nickname of Louis Armstrong.

His nickname might have been something he had from childhood and not related to his occupations. It's certainly unusual!

They weren't in Buckinghamshire by any chance?

I see sotchel is a Buckinghamshire word for - "to traipse along with a slovenly gait"

How do nicknames come about, I wonder.

My father in law and his two brothers were all farm workers and had the nicknames, Onk, Cap and Tood (prounounced as in wood)
Even they didn't seem to know how their names came about.
