It looks like "made a bying of one of them" but that doesn't make any sense!

I think they have made a beginning of one of them but have misspelt it.

          I think it says

"we have made a beging of one of them"

meaning "we have made a beginning on one of them"

Had a look too - and as Wendy says - but doesn't make sense - if you know when letter dated, could be an old recipe book could help...... that programme ''Supersizers'' on at the moment lists Menus of all sorts of things they ate in the past which don't make sense now.

the letter was sent in 1838 from farmers in Westmorland to family in surrey

with the bit I crossed out saying '& think it a very nice one' ...... it sounds strange.... maybe it was some sort of deal ....I think think they bought them and sometimes sold them to other friends

As I read it, they are grateful to have received the 2 hams & have started to munch one of them! (rough translation)

I photographed them at Kendal ... and I'm trying to transcribe them all ...most are pretty easy until you come across a strange word ..... I'll just put a question mark.

                  Thanks everyone

Just laughing at Bridget ....great.... and then the next bit ' & think it a very nice one'

I think it's 'on' rather than 'of'

not a great help I know ... but thought I'd chip in anyway

Just had last stare....think Jill, OC and Bridget are right.

"made a beginning on one of them & think it a nice one" .........meaning the ham.

                      That's it.

                      Thanks all
