  • New Ancestry search.

I don't know if this has been raised already.

The new way of searching on Ancestry - I don't like it and think its a load of rubbish.:(
Is there any way of getting the old search back, or at least improving the results.

I've just been trying to find a death between 1851 & 1861 in Staffordshire with an * taking the place of the end of the surname. It given me results for the whole country and I've no idea of how many pages there are to search or how to narrow the results.

    Thanks
    Helen

No, I don't like it either and I have switched back to the old way - I think there is a bar at the top of the Search page.

I discovered that it will not search forename alone, if that forename sounds like a surname - does that make sense? I was trying to find my Kirkham Kirkham, put just the name Kirkham in the forename box and it brought up everyone with the SURNAME Kirkham - useless.

Please could somebody explain ? ... I can't see anything new ... am I looking at the wrong page ?

I just select whatever I want to look at from the Home page (ie BMDs/ censuses etc)

Saw that bar last night, but when I clicked on it I was still on the new search. Here at work i didn't even get the bar.
I tried the tour last night, then filled in the questionnaire. If they intend to leave it as is, I'll be using it a lot less.

          They've made some changes.
On the front page, you get to enter a name.
Then birth year - country & county
Death year - country 7 county.

When you hit search, you don't geta nice page of results telling you how many matches there are in each census or in the BMDs, you just get a list of starred matching results. Doesn't tell you how many pages either.

And how are you supposed to enter a birth year if you haven't found who you are looking for?

            Ah ... found it

Have hardly ever searched that way so wouldn't have noticed the changes

I did manage to get it to give me the list of results instead of the starred rankings a couple of weeks ago... I'll just see if I can find out how I did it...

No, I can't get it to go back to the way I don't like now!

I have never used the new search and always use the home page, not the search page.

Isn't there an "exact match only" box you can tick to stop the ranked results?

There is in the old search, but I don't think I ever found one in the new search.
I also gave up with it after about half an hour.
