  • Where's this place in Devon?

I'm following Mary Ann Britton. First sighting is in 1841:

Class HO107, Piece 234, Book 15, Civil Parish Landkey, County Devon, Enumeration District 13, Folio 5, Page 5.

    At Newlands, Landkey are:
    Honour Britton 33 dressmaker
    Mary Ann Britton 10
    Harriot/Harriet Britton 7
    Elizabeth Britton 3

In 1851 they are at the same address:
    HO107 / Piece 1892 / Folio 87 / Page 5
Honour (transcribed Homier) Britton, widow, 41, dressmaker born where????
Mary Ann 21, glover born Landkey
    Harriet 16, glover born Landkey

So who can read Honour's place of birth in 1851? Having found a Google map I think it must be Swimbridge, which is the next village to Landkey. I hadn't come across either of them before.

And can anyone please find a marriage for Honour and a birth or baptism for Mary Ann (presumably circa 1830)?

    I agree that it's Swimbridge.

There's this marriage on the IGI:

    JOHN BRITTON
    Marriages:
    Spouse: HONOR THOMAS
Marriage: 22 JAN 1828 Landkey, Devon
Messages: Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record.

Well blow me down, Merry. Thanks for the cornucopia of info. I tried the IGI and got zilch. I wonder if John died before civil registration - off to have a look.

It all makes sense, locality wise. Mary Ann married in Barnstaple district in 1856.

Edit: crossed with a further deluge of baps.!!

The ironic thing is that Mary Ann's daughter, another Mary Ann, was my great-grandfather's second wife so these aren't my rellies at all! He was 83 and she was an old maid of 55, and they had 12 years of marriage.

Actually, I'm not as there's no likely marriage for Honor's parents on the IGI, so I had stopped! lol

Well I've now been through the full death index from 1837 to 1841 without success, so I think he must have died before July 1837. One page (q4 1840 from memory) is hilarious, with the last ten entries crammed in but still perfectly legible.

Anyone with access to the NBI or Landkey/Swimbridge burial records please?

                              On this Genuki page:

                              GENUKI/Devon: Landkey - Genealogy

                              it says:

                              Genealogy

The Online Parish Clerk scheme's representative for this parish is Ann O'Toole, who invites queries and lookup requests. (Resources: PRs on fiche, indexed.)

and there's a link to email Ann.

Having looked at the Swimbridge page, she is the OPC for that parish too, with the same link!

Ooh thanks for that, Merry. I've sent Ann an email and will see what happens. There's something a bit odd date-wise with Mary Ann's sister(s) Eliza and Elizabeth. I suspect one died and the other may have been born after her father's death. We'll probably never know. There are no clues from the MI transcription I found on GENUKI, which was for the parish church.

I'll be about 8 miles from there in August UJ, if they're not on the Wiki by then I'll try & get there & do the churches & any other old buildings.

Thanks for the offer Mavis. Hopefully Ann the OPC will know what burial grounds there are/were in Landkey and Swimbridge apart from Landkey parish church. As Merry discovered, they were Wesleyan Methodists.

Update: I've been contacted by someone on GR who got a match with Mary Ann Britton. She's most impressed that Merry found the Britton/Thomas marriage. She'd been looking for it for ages.

Anyone willing to look for John Britton in the 1841 census, please? And I haven't got any leads on his baptism either.
I've found the best match for his death is q1 1842, Barnstaple (vol. 10 page 22). (BTW FreeBMD has a query for the page number but it's quite clear on the image).
I've scanned through the 1841 images for Barnstaple Union Workhouse and the North Devon Infirmary and can't see him.

I'm off on holiday now (back on 1st. July) so you have lots of time!!
