1872 Youlgreave, Derbyshire 9 not that we much help as they moved at lot)

the father of children is william herbert

they do not appear on a census together so have no details apart from his name

this man she is surpose to have married.

she was not married in 1891

but by 1901 she had 2 kids Dorothy grace herbert 1899 born in essex

and Luvema delia 1900 Sheering, Essex, England

she was still living with
her mum and dad william and sarah pratt and working as a school teacher with them.

Luvema delia who is grandmother had william herbert down as dead on her wedding cert in 1927.

Dorothy never got married.


on the birth cert william herbert is down as a master paper hanger.

and my mums say she was told he was lime distemper.

this is my big brick wall

There's this one on the 1901 (paperhanger and painter):

RG13; Piece: 603; Folio: 131; Page: 21

says he is single, but if you can't find a marriage then that's not surprising!!

Was his name on all the birth certs of the children and written as if they were married (ie with "formerly Pratt" for the mother)?

Did he register any of the births?

yes it was writren as if they were married she called herself herbert ormerly pratt

his name all was all birth cert

mum was infomat on Dorothy grace is birth

cant find Luvema delia at moment may be at mums

i cant find edith emily death either as i dont know what name to look under she died around 1907 -1914 ish

and he is living where all the lines in my tree come from

and the pratts were liveing in guildford in 1891 so a very good could be

William Herbert's birth reg:

Herbert William Coot Thakeham 2b 300

From the 1881 census it looks like he may have been illegitimate! Coot (or even William Coot) might be his father's name, if I'm right that his mother wasn't married.

So have we knocked one wall down and built another?!

Is the head of the house in 1871 and 1881 the same woman? Harriet Holder?

In 1871 enumerator has missed off the H but if you look at the housename column he wrote her name their by mistake and crossed it out and on that version she has an H.
In which case I guess the Charlotte Herbert on 1871 is the same as Charlotte Doughty(??) on 1881
