  • This ought to be a cinch!

Elizabeth Adams Edwards was born in Plymouth in May 1841. I have her birth certificate.

In 1861, she is living with her parents in Maker, Cornwall, aged 19.

Using Freebmd and Ancestry & GR via the TNA website, I have:

    1871 - in Maker aged 27
1875 - marries George Rogers in Stoke Damerel
    1881 - ????
1891 - in Maker aged 48 (no husband)
1901 - in Maker aged 57 living on own means
1907 - dies in St Germans aged 69

So where the flip is she in 1881?

This ought to be the easiest census, but I'm blowed if I can find her - with or without George.

do you know if George is still alive or not?

Does she say she's a widow from 1891 onwards?

I can't tell in 1891 if she is a widow, as I can't access the image.

I was quite taken with an Elizabeth A Rogers, married to a George who is a fly proprietor in 1881, but it looks as if they were together in 1871 too.

1891 on Ancestry - when you find her in the index and click, the image appears, but she's not on the page! Clearly a woman of mystery.

            Hi Nell!

No ref, but this is what I searched on:

Elizabeth Rogers b abt 1843 Plymouth , Devon, England living Maker , Cornwall

I plugged in as many relationships as seemed appropriate, but nothing yielded results (though I probably just missed one) but she isn't with a spouse.

Is she on the next page, as part of a household?

I have found Ancestry grouping by household, rather than actual reference.

Yes, JBee, the 1851 ref is correct. (I can't see the image, but I have found the ref before. Dad was a coastguard and rarely at home on census night. I was most peeved that he managed to scarper between registering his daughter's birth in May 1841 and the census taken less than a fortnight later.)

The 1881 ref is a bit out with age & birthplace.

She's down as cousin, widow aged 48.

The head of house is Helen Slope single and 57, own means, b Cornwall Kingsand?
There's also a visitor, Sarah Ellis 80 single own means, b Cornwall...can't read birthplace.

                      Cousin - now that's a relationship I didn't think of!

Ellen Slope is by herself in 1881 - well, with some Ellises.

I don't recognise the name, but note a Slope/Rogers marriage in the right period in Maker, so Elizabeth may well be with husband's rellies.

There's a maritime slant on all the family and her sister. It would be just my luck if she's on a ship somewhere!

In 1871 she is also boarding with Helen Stope, a boarding house keeper. Have you looked for Helen in 1881 ?

Just checking my CDdisks of the 1881 census

Ooh, thanks Dicole. That must mean she met George when he visited his cousin.

Ellen Slope/Helen Stope is in Maker in 1881 alright, but Elizabeth isn't with her.

                            Sorry I went to bed!
I can't get 1891 image even using Helen Slope. I just get a page in Maker headed with family called Jeffrey.

                                Merry

I'm going mad! I've just gone back and found her but last time I looked I just didn't see her. I think I was misled by the blank spaces and probably thought it was the end of the section, instead of scrolling down. Doh!
