  • Short-sighted enumerator?

William Matthews and Jessie Miller Harrison married Tynemouth q1 1868 vol 10b page 262.
Their son William born Tynemouth q4 1869 vol 10b page 555.

    Found in 1871 census (RG10 / 5114 / 47 / 90) with Jessie's father Thomas and brother Robert staying with them.

    Going forward to 1881 (RG11 / 5076 / 7 / 8) Jessie (wife, 35) plus children plus Thomas, now a widower.

Tracing the Harrisons backwards I've found them in 1861 (RG9 / 3841 / 54 / 24) but the enumerator seems to have been asleep.

Thomas (head) aged 42, master mariner
Thomas (wife!!!!) aged 17, boat builder
What looks like John M aged 15, son
I think this is Jessie, aged 15 (old fashioned double s). The enumerator had several goes!

Does the team agree with me about the 1861 census?

And can anyone find Thomas senior's wife? He is married with no wife present in 1871 (and 1861 if you ignore the enumerator).

Thomas snr's wife Jessie (age 30) plus children. Same street as 1861.

      Thomas
      Thomas
      Jehu M.
      John W.
      Jane A.
      Robert
      Joseph

          Uncle John..

          1851.....the one you have

          Jessie 30 wife
          Thomas 7 son
          Jessie 5 daughter
          John 3 son
          Jane 7months daughter.

          1861

          Thomas 42 head (married)
Thomas 17 wife ( I'd say the enumerator just put down wife in the next row)??
Jessie 15 son (definitely dau in 1851)
          John 12
          Jane 10
          Robert
          Joseph

So all the kids are the right age Robert and Joseph born after 1851.

Problem is Thomas being wife.......could be explained as simple mistake as I said.
Jessie has changed from daughter to son......however, if you look at the image her age is in the female line and crossed out.......maybe the husband is saying........"no, that's my son" meaning Thomas junior not Jessie????

Now where Jessie (wife) is, I don't know. I'd be in some sort of care facility if my kids kept changing sex LOL.

So in 1871......little Jessie turns out to be female as she has married William Matthews, which makes Thomas the father-in-law and Robert the brother-in-law.

            Thomas still saying he's married....

Hi Libby, I think we're following the same thought processes, which is more than can be said for the enumerator. What's the betting he got home and couldn't read what he'd written?

I'll see if the IGI can shed any light.

I've now found Thomas snr's marriage to Jessie MILLER in South Shields q2 1842 vol 24 page 160. But I can't find Jessie at all after 1851.
