  • Half way to cracking............

The mystery of the middle name McQueen that some of you have been helping me with.
I was wondering where the middle name McQueen came from when my rellie William Broadfoot named his daughter Elisabeth McQueen Broadfoot.
Now William was the commander of the Countess of Galloway steam boat.

After finding a possible marriage between a Dunbar Broadfoot to a Hugh McQueen in 1816, i went on the search of a link between Dunbar and my Broadfoot's, i came across a memorial in Whithorn Scotland for the said Hugh McQueen and Dunbar which stated that Hugh died at sea in 1840 and dunbar died in 1880.
I then went on Scotlands People and viewed her death which stated her parents were Francis Broadfoot and Dunbar which led me nowhere.

I then searched again for a will left by Hugh McQueen, there were five Hugh's and i found the said Hugh who died in 1840.
But underneath was another Hugh McQueen that caught my eye because he was also Commander of the Countess of Galloway steam boat and he had died in 1856 orf atleast that was when the will was completed.

What are the odds that by shere coincidense the first Hugh wasnt the guy but the next Hugh looks to be the correct one

Any added thoughts would be great

    I found this

Donna Brewster wrote an excellent history of Wigtown titled "Wigtown the Story of a Royal and Ancient Burgh." In the book, she writes the "Countess of Galloway" was advertised in 1853 as being a ship of 250 horse power which made the passage between Galloway ports and Liverpool in eight or nine hours. It contained "separate State Rooms with from four to eight berths in each, for the accommodation of families." Hugh McQueen was the commander of "the Countess" which sailed from Wigtown, Kirkcudbright or Garlieston to Liverpool on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and from Liverpool to Wigtown on Mondays and Thursdays. A comforting note was sounded in the advertisment of the boat's service: "This ship is furnished with Phillips Patent Fire Annihilators."

Elisabeth was born in 1838 and i know from this that Hugh was definately commander in 1853 and died in 1856.

William would probably have known Hugh.

When i searched for William as captain i came across an account where someone had wrote that by their memory captain Milligan and captain Broadfoot were commanders of the countess of galloway (unsure of years)

When William died in 1864 the paper said he was the late commander.

Danny, are you sure that there are two different Hugh McQueens, one died 1840 and one died 1856, or could they both be the same one? I've got some people who have 3 different entries on the "wills" on Scotland's People in different years (but all for the same person) because there are supplementary inventories where they discovered a few years later that there was some money or property that they didn't know about when they did the initial inventory.

P.S. Oops, just read your second post - could one of them be the father of the other one?
