  • Ancestry World Deluxe - a cheeky ask!

I have found my man going to the US. However, Ancestry won't let me look at the record as I only have Ancestry UK, and I really don't want to upgrade for just this family, who are not a direct line.

Would anyone be prepared to look at the record for me, please?

He is Eli Kirkham, born 1830, arriving USA between 1881 and 1885. I am expecting him to be travelling with extended family, i.e. all his children and their spouses and children. He was the first hit on Ancestry "Search passenger lists, blah blah blah". He was heading for Utah, I believe.

    Thankyou in advance.

OC - I can't find an immigration match that fits the name and d.o.b. with such a late USA arrival date.

    I have found a possible death though, Provo Utah, b. 7 Aug 1830, d. 9 Sep 1894.

That Eli Kirkman was travelling with a wife Betsey and (presumably) children James and Jane. Could they be your family mistranscribed?

Mary, I know his wife was Betsey on the 1871 census. They had a son Benjamin b abt 1858 and did have a James too I think, but not at all sure about a Jane. Sorry, this is from memory from at least a couple of days ago! There's a thread about them on here somewhere.........

Yes, I thought Betsey rang a bell.

Sorry folks, had to switch off for a "scheduled power supply interruption" which wasn't on MY schedule!

Yes that must be him mistranscribed as Kirkman - funny, he came up as KirkHAM when I seached.

                Eli born 1830
                Elizabeth (Betty/Betsy) b 1826 wife

                Kirkham Kirkham 1849 son
his wife Sarah Jane c 1849
                their children
                Mary Jane 1873
                Eli 1875
                Richard 1877
                Daniel 1879

                James 1853 (son of Eli)
                Samuel 1858 ditto
                Sarah 1863 dau of Eli
                Caroline 1865 ditto
                Jane 1867 ditto

                and POSSIBLY

                Thomas Kirkham b 1800
                wife Mary b 1806.
(Eli's parents), although I wonder if an 85-year old man would want to make that sea journey?

The Eli born 1830 has TWO death dates, the one UJ found and another which says 9 September 1930 - making him one hundred years old. Neither is backed up by fact, although the 100 year old one does give an address, so is presumably a family sub entry.

Thankyou Quiffdo - that looks like my man!

Thanks UJ and Sue - wonder who the 1930 death was? His grandson Eli, I suppose.

By the way, if you only want to look up a few entries for the USA and you only have a UK subscription, it will let you buy some pay-as-you-go credits for the USA records - or at least, it has let me do so in the past so I would think the facility is still available.

There is a KIRKHAM forum & DNA project run by Joni (JOANH954@aol.com). It is an excellent forum and Joni will help with her access to US Ancestry and knowledge of Kirkham name

Thankyou Tony, that is very interesting and I shall follow that up.

The Kirkhams are not my direct relatives, just a family I can't leave alone, lol!
