Backing up my Family Tree

Can anyone give me some advice on backing up my Family Tree. I was thinking of putting it all on a rewritable DVD but was told that an external portable hard drive might be better. Any suggestions of make and capacity. I would be most grateful!

You could probably back it up quite easily on a CD/DVD or memory stick.
Do you know the size of the file?

I use RW DVD Kate (two, alternating). It works OK for me but I am thinking about getting a memory stick. Mainly because I carry the most recent backup with me in my handbag (sad or what lol) and a memory stick would take up less room lol.
