    Hi

many years ago my late Aunt said there were vikings in the family. Of course I took it with a pinch of salt. However her father, my grandfather born 1885, has a middle name which is NEIJBER which is a scandinavian surname, found in Denmark and Sweden. There are no Neijber's on the census's and only one on BMD and that is a marriage, in Liverpool, where my grandfather as born.

Why would someone give their son a foreign name unless there is some substance to it, which I have not found in my tree. I have gone right back on that side to the mid 1600's and found nothing. The only thing I haven't found is my grandfather's maternal grandmother's maiden name. Any suggestions please, all would be helpful.

Vikings.....maybe, but I think it more likely that there is some northen european blood a little closer.

Middle names were sometimes the mothers maiden name (or other female relatives).

Sounds like a nice little mystery

The terms Vikings refer to Scandinavians invaders around the period 800-1000. It is highly unlikely that oral family history would go back that far.
Perhaps there is a more recent Scandinavian connection in the family and the term Viking has been misused.

Do you have your grandfathers parents marriage certificate? Is there any suggestion there of a scandinavian name?

Is this the lady who would have married Elliott Bayley?

Ok, Elliott was on his own in 1841 - Right?

So his wife died between 1817 when Elizabeth was born and 1841, Do we know if there were any other children born after Elizabeth?

I would be inclind to start looking at the parish records for Walton-on-the-Hill (residence of Elliot and Elizabeth in 1841). Hopefully her mother will have been burried there and maybe Elizabeth was born there.

I would then start working out from there, you may also want to look at the parish records for St Nicholas, Liverpool where Elliot was baptised maybe he married there.

You may end up having to trace her family back a few generations but hopefully the name will jump out at you.

                                    Good luck
