  • Even the Royal Family is mistranscribed

    looking for an Edward on 1851 census, I was surprised to find this entry:

    Edward VII of The United Kingdom
    [father] H R H Francis Albert Augustus Charles Emanuel abt 1842 Buckingham Palace, Buckinghamshire, England Son St George Hanover Square, Middlesex

    HO107; Piece: 1478; Folio: 645; Page: 19;

    Clearly twaddle. He didn't become Edward VII until 20th century!

    The actual entry has him as H.R.H. Albert Edward and his occupation is "Prince of Wales".

      And Buckingham Palace isn't in Poland either, which is what I thought they were trying to say when I read:

      Polan, Buckinghamshire, England

      :D

        If I remember correctly, wasn't this the census year when I (who can use the Ancestry indexes, but am too mean to subscribe for the actual images) thought that a washerwoman in the East End was Our Beloved Queen?!!

            The Prince of Wales doesn't become entitled to that designation until it's granted. Prince Charles was a teenager or older at the time of his investiture.

              Queen Victoria created her son Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on 8 December 1841. He was one day short of a month old

                So why did our Queen make Charles wait till he was 21?

                  Nell

                  She didn't - he had the title from birth but his investiture was, as is usual, when he was 21. A sort of official go-ahead, I suppose.
