  • A Tale of Two Cousins

Habakkuk Bartram of Dickleburgh, Norfolk had four sons.

Two of these were Samuel born Nov 1801 and James born May 1804

Samuel married Ellen Chilvers in 1835

James married Mary Smith in 1833

On 3rd May 1840 James and Mary baptised their 4th son Samuel Bartram

on 14th June 1840 Samuel and Ellen baptised their 4th son Samuel Bartram

both baby Samuels appear on the 1841 census in Dickleburgh with their respective parents.

There is only one Samuel Bartram showing up in later census, married to Tryphena.

I am trying to figure out which of the two he would be.

On the 1851 census the families live two doors apart.

Samuel and Ellen now have a Samuel aged 4 and James and Mary have Samuel aged 10.

There is a baptism for a Samuel James Bartram born Sep 1847.

Am I safe to assume that Samuel and Ellen's son died and they renamed a later one after him, and the Samuel born 1840 on later census is the son of James and Mary.

It isn't unknown for the Bartrams to have two children with the same first name at the same time and call one by a middle name - that's why I'm after a bit of reassurance that I'm not making too many assumptions.

these are a side line so I'd trying to avoid buying the Samuel/Tryphena marriage cert if I can

    Thank you in advance

Assuming they stayed in Dickleburgh, which is in Depwade reg district, there are two possible deaths:

    Samuel Bartram 1842 Jan-Feb-Mar Depwade
    Samuel Bartram 1843 Oct-Nov-Dec Depwade

Without age at death, you're stuck with not knowing if either of these is one of the ones you are investigating. No burials for relevant dates on familyhistoryonline either.

I do have a whole list of burials for Dickleburgh somewhere, but they're not very thorough with infant burials. I have several I know who died who aren't in the All Saints registers.

One of those Samuels will be the brother of Habakkuk who died between 1841 and 1851.
So hopefully the other will be the missing one from 1840.

It all sounds right. What did Samuel and Tryphena name their children? Did they have a James early on?

Actually - I didn't even look at them properly yet I was so concerned with making sure I didn't marry Tryphena off to the wrong man

          I'll have a look now
