  • A park near Marylebone?

The baby in this picture was born 1872, Marylebone, London, so I think this picture was probably taken soon after... but where? The statue could be a clue. Does anyone recognise it?

The picture comes up as very faded, but is that a folly behind them?

Regents Park is off the Marylebone Road

Regents Park was my first thought too, but London is dotted with squares and green spaces.

Google's satellite map shows greenery in Bryanston Squre and Portman Square which are both in Marylebone.

And of course they could have been on a day trip further afield.

I think the key would be identifying the statue.

By the way, the original photograph was almost black. It is not on paper but on metal. But a brilliant colleague at work was able to achieve this result for me with a bit of computer magic and I can tell you it's far better than even the original.

If you could rescan it at a higher resolution (300) we'd be able to see more detail then maybe identifying the statue would be easier

It says it's only 72 pixels per inch

Here it is enlarged and with a little more contrast

It looks more like a back garden than a park

Are you sure it isn't taken in a studio against a backdrop?

Sounds as if it is a tin type photo, these were cheap to do, and were used by street and beach photographers, this would fit with a day out in a big park. ( if the photo is going black it should be conserved but I'm not sure how.:o)

p.s. I am pretty sure that it a gothic building of some sort behind them covered in ivy.

I dont get on here much, but have been researching the Marylebone area.
I think there was a place called the Pleasure Gardens, which like Hereford Street no longer exists. That was around the same time as you think the photo was taken, I could be wrong - I'm only taking it on memory of what I read.

Also Hereford Street was also turned into Hereford Gardens, I dont know whether they were a park as such...
