    advice please...my grandmother was Martha Ellis b 1898 Garston,Liverpool
    her mother was Martha Hartley b 1861 ...I have MARTHA HARTLEYS father as John Hartley Barker b 1835...he married Martha Collins(b 1824 Dunham Massey) at Manchester cathedral 26-dec 1858.....
    I can find Martha BARKER b 1861 Dunham Massey.....i can`t find
    Martha Hartley........would it have been possible for Martha Barker to marry as Martha Hartley??........i`m going on lancs bmd for more details
    John Hartley Barker(46) and Martha Hartley Barker(20) are in the 1881 census in Salford..martha is b dunham massey...me feels there`s something amiss here...puzzled...allan

    I can find Martha BARKER b 1861 Dunham Massey
    can`t find Martha Hartley

    would it have been possible for Martha Barker to marry as Martha Hartley

    John Hartley Barker(46) and Martha Hartley Barker(20) are in the 1881 census in Salford..

        It sounds as though John and his family may have gone by two different surnames - Hartley and Barker - could it be that John was illegitimate and those were the surnames of each of his parents? Or maybe one was his stepfather's surname? Anyway, yes, if so then Martha could have used the "other" surname when she got married.

            Legally, Martha could have used any surname she fancied, as long as she wasn't trying to defraud anyone.

                good morning Jess...glad you got some good news last night...thanks for the 1871 census...so it looks like martha collins(1st wife) has died and John has re-married...nancy...or is nancy a nickname for martha??...allan..added...it says all born Salford...I have Martha b Dunham massey?

                    my 85 year old aunty said something about Runcorn in regards to Hartley/barker family...I know he was a butcher in the 1871 census..i think he had a butchers shop in the late 1800`s...in Runcorn(only 7 miles from Garston...he should be on the 1891 census if thats the case?...allan
