  • Who is Nathan and what articles does he have?

I have recently found the following on the MSN Live Search Books and wondered if anyone with a slightly better theatrical knowledge than myself could suggest who "Nathan" might be and what being "articled" to him might involve.

(found by searching for Mrs Henry Marston if anyone needs to find the book)

Was born in London in 1810 as was the daughter of John Baptiste Noel, who, encouraging her predilection for the stage, articled her to Nathan.......

    thank you in advance

I can't help, just didn't want you to feel ignored!

    a) don't know if Nathan is 1st or 2nd name and
    b) I've only heard of people being "articled" as "articled clerks" - which is something solicitors are. It's a training/apprenticeship type thingy.

    Main Entry: 2article
    Function: transitive verb
    Inflected Form(s): articled; articling \-k(ə-)liŋ\
    Date: 1820
: to bind by articles (as of apprenticeship)

source: articled - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

so presumably it was a training agreement to do with the theatre, though I've never heard of it in connection with theatres at all.

You probably already know there's a portrait of Mrs H in the NPG
Mrs Henry Marston (née Miss Noel) (1809-1887), Actress

I think they became Nathans & Bermans, then Angel & Bermans in Shaftesbury Avenue (vague recollection don't take this as gospel, I once shopped at Angels fancy dress dept)
