  • Help needed working out whose in charge

    Hello

    I just looked at an 1881 welsh census which one of my OH rellies is on by the name of Adam Platt.
    He is on a ship and his occupation is Captain.
    However i had alook at some other people on the ship and one was down as Master etc.
    Also on each of the people was a different vessel.

    Does anybody know what it means?
    And what sort of vessel it would be?

    Class: RG11; Piece: 5501; Folio: 124; Page: -8;

    One last thing, on the 1861 England census he is also on a vessel but by the looks of it a much smaller one.

    I'm a bit confused by what you say about the 1881 census. As far as I can see Adam is on a boat with just one other person. Adam is down as Captain and the other man, William Wright, is down as Mate.

    The boat is called George B and it is a 78 ton, flat coasting, carrying gravel. On census night it was at anchor off Mostyn, Flintshire (all this is from the description of the "district")

    The writing on the census sheet will most likely be Adam Platt's as they didn't give out a separate sheet for boats. Adam's signature is at the bottom of the census sheet.

      So all the other people on the census I.E vessels are just other folks and their boats?

        In 1861 he is on a boat called Windy Mile and he is listed as Boy. The Mate and Captain are his brother and father. John Platt made his mark at the bottom, so someone else must have filled in the form.

        The Windy Mile was a 48 ton river flat, inland trader, registered in Runcorn (the boat in my earlier posting was registered in Liverpool). On census night it was moored at Western Beach, River Mersey.

          If a boat/ship is listed under Vessels there are usually dozens of "districts" each one of which is a boat or ship with a name.
