Can I just look for an address on a census as opposed to a name
and does anyone know where Wellington Passages in Tower Hamlets were in 1851

Ann, the censuses on findmypast have address searches. The only one on ancestry with an address search is 1881, but you can "browse" the other censuses and pick a county, then a town, then go through looking at the description of each enumeration district to find which one includes the address you are looking for.
Also the "official" 1901 census site has an address search.

Thank you. I will try the ancestry first as I subscribe to that

Bear in mind that there were lots of name changes to roads in the 1870s.

Do you have a certificate, or a census address?

Bother, I forgot there was a second question! Sorry! Could it be Bethnal Green?

Wellington Passages (Tower Hamlets) doesn't show up on an address search on FMP in 1861

.. and nothing in 1871 either.

If I told you, I would have to ....

When trying to track an address in the census I often Google the name of street and year and sometimes the word census There's normally something out there to help. Fourth hit on this search.
                      Wellington.Passage 1851 - Google Search

In this case a family tree mentioning a birth at the address in 1848. So I searched that name and found they they had moved (but still in the same area and only a couple of streets away). A quick flick through the folio and I found Wellington Passage.

Blimey!! I used to use that method, but something in my brain must have short circuited and I've not tried googling the address etc for about a year! lol

                        Thanks very much
