    I think Sarah is a flatman's wife.

Have you found him elsewhere? (on a canal?)

Might explain why her husband isnt on the census with her and in 1891 their son Enoch is in the merchant service.

                        Hi Danny

The Trent and mersey Canal at Barnton was used to transport salt from the mines in Cheshire in flat bottomed barges.

Huge flats sailed the River Weaver in Cheshire transporting salt and their families often travelled with them. It was a huge industry.
I was lucky enough to find one of mine on Ancestry as Captain on a flat barge docked at Liverpool with his siggy on the forms..

Ive just checked now and it looks like John Platt was the captain of his own vessel and then his son Enock became a Flatman too.

Cant gey away from the water tonight lol

Same as me Danny lol, I have loads of flat captains and ships carpenters. An interesting lol..

In the late 1700s when the canal was built Josiah Wedgewood was involved as he saw it an ideal opportunity to transport his goods from his own factory.

The salt industry was mainly on the River Weaver as it leads straight into the Mersey..
