  • Does anyone recognise the uniform?

Does anyone recognise this uniform at all.

She was born 1889, married Mar qtr 1919 and died Jun qtr 1919 so I am wondering if it is anything to do with WW1.

I was reading the other day about munition workers in WW1 and wondered if that would be an answer.

I don't know when it was taken. Sorry.

    Thanks Lin

I don't really know. She was born in Shipley and died in Knaresborough Yorks, so I presume it is Yorkshire.

I've no idea but it looks as though it is taken in a studio.

I am fairly sure it is the type of uniform that women wore in munitions factories. It was horrible work and she may have died as a direct result of poisoning from the stuff they had to use.

Try Googling for 'The Devils Porridge', which shows some of the things women did then, wearing similar short (for the time) smocks over trousers.

Although she was from Yorkshire she may not have been working there. People came to North Cumberland/South Scotland from all over the country to work at the factories at Gretna.

                        Thanks Ann and Velma.

I was reading about the munition girls and they had overalls like that on but different hats but there were millions of them so it could vary.

I am doing this for a colleague but we wondered if her death was due to childbirth or the great flu eperdemic we never thought of the affects of her work.

I wil suggest that he gets the death cert.

Thanks for your help and I will look at that web site.

The cap that she is wearing is of the style used by the WAAC's (Women's Army Auxiliary Corps) who later became the Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps. It is of a soft peak and had a storm flap at the back. The badge it self appears, at first glance, to be of a fusilier regiment (a flaming grenade/bomb) which, if this is the case, would indicate to me that she had been attached to work within that regiment. Also she appears to be wearing puttees rather than trousers and therefore my have been employed as a driver, but I stand to be corrected on all of this.

                            Hi Don

That sounds really good. I certainly won't correct you as I know nothing about regiments etc.

I think we all agree that she is definitely helping the war effort.

I think I will go on TNA and see if there are any medals for her. It's worth a try.

                            Didn't think of that before

                            Thanks again

Lin - medal cards are on Ancestry

Search British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 - Ancestry.co.uk

But you need to be a member to view it....
