  • Next generation of Broadfoot

    Hi all

I managed to go back another generation with my Broadfoot's when i found Commander Broadfoot's father Alexander Broadfoot who on the 1841 scottish census has Coastguard Superannuation Fund as his occupation. And on the 1851 census is down as Retired Coastguard.

Does anyone know where i can get any information on him please?

And out of intrest it also said on his monument in St ninians churchyard that he lost another 2 son's to the sea, 1 by the name of Elliot Broadfoot who died at sea on the 30th november 1847 aged 29 and James who drowned off the coast of Syria on the 6th of september 1841 aged 27.

Considering they all decided to do something with the sea, they didnt have much luck with the sea mistress.

Danny, if he died in Scotland after the start of civil registration (1855) then his death certificate should tell you the names of his parents - have a look on Scotland's People.

Could it be a marriage by declaration? I don;t know when they were no longer legal but I think it was long after that.

What exactly is a marriage by declaration? And is there anyway to find them if they did it that way?

May be someone else, then - I imagine a coastguard would have been in the Navy rather htan the Army.

So, it looks as though Alexander has his mother Margaret with him on the 1841 census and her age is 91? I can't see Alexander's birth on the IGI nor his parents' marriage, although maybe you will manage to find them on Scotland's People as they do have some entries that aren't on the IGI. It is true that the parents could have had an "irregular" marriage which wasn't recorded. But you may be able to trace them back anyway even without finding their marriage - I realised this with one of my lines recently where I had been stuck for ages trying to find a marriage - then I found a will which I thought could be the wife's father and it sorted it all out for me! If the maiden name given for Margaret on Alexander's death cert is correct then maybe you can find something similar. But of course the info on the death cert is only as accurate as the knowledge of the informant. At least we have a rough year of birth for Margaret too, from the 1841 census - she should have been born about 1750.

From reading through some of the monumental inscriptions at the Whithorn graveyard (St Ninian's) it does look as though Hannah was quite a common surname in that area, though - variations Hanna and Hannay - so it is likely that she was born in or near Whithorn. I wonder if the family belonged to one of the breakaway churches and that is why we can't find the marriage or their children's births?

Plus the 1841 census says that Margaret was born in Wigtownshire, at least according to ancestry.

Margaret Hannah's husband William Broadfoot was another seaman that i believe came from that area, if only i could find mention of him, that might help.
