Women didn't get the vote till 1908 in Victoria - so how come some women are listed in the 1856 electoral roll? Anybody know?

According to the first google I looked at, South Australian women were granted the right to vote in 1894, followed by Western Australia in 1899, NSW in 1902 and finally Victoria in 1908.
Australian women (except Aboriginal women) were enfranchised for the new Commonwealth Parliament in 1901. Women first voted in second Federal election in 1903.
I don't know about 1856.....would they have been property owners?

Yes, I'm looking on Ancestry:
Australian Electoral Rolls, 1901-1936 - Ancestry.com.au
If you enter the name Mary Brown (I just chose a common name at random), and specify Victoria 1856, there are quite a few hits.
I don't have access to the full results, so maybe these are actually for another year?
