An occupier is the house owner (and living in the house) or the main person renting the property (sort of head of house). It is one of the catagories for registering a birth.

hmmm I'll have a look when I get home, Ancestry is logged in there so can't look at work. Haven't got any Troops so far...

The family was living in Bucknall in 1858/9 when the next child was born. And Lincoln for the next one in 1860/1.

            Thanks Elaine

Going back to 1841 census, Susan Troupe, nee Fenwick, appears to be Mary's sister.

blimey! three replies while I was typing lol. That marriage is interesting - wonder if Susan(nah) was Mary's sister.

*sulks - still not managed to track down Mary's marriage to John Close*

that's odd. I didn't try it today but it has previously said I was logged in elsewhere. I assumed this was to stop people sharing access.

hi all, just dashing off a note before I leave for home. I have traced Susan(nah) Troop and her children through the census. I have found the Fenwick family in Bucknall in 1841 but can't find the parents (or children) after that. Any ideas? I wonder if they may have been mistrans.

Catch ya later *must log out of Ancestry*

                                      shows Edward b1850

looks as if mother Mary may have remarried - but cannot see a marriage to Thomas Cottingham.

Thomas Cottingham is a widower on 1851 census

sorry for delay in replying Elaine - I got dragged out to the garden when I got home ("if you want me to sort that tree out tell me what you want NOW")

Anyway, 1851 yes that's them (and it quite helpfully confirms how they would have said their surname!). That Betsey has been a mystery to me previously (on the 1861) but I think she is Mary Ann's daughter. I'm having trouble reading place of birth for Edwin (who is Edward on the 41!) and Mary.

Looks like Mary and youngest son on the 61.

Thanks for finding them for me.
