  • Ship 'Camonia' Update

    Hi all

I recently re-read the newspaper article that stated my rellie was killed at sea from falling from the mizzen mast and saw that the ship 'Camonia' if that is what its called was headed from liverpool docks to Valparaiso (chile islands) would that help me work out what the ship was actually called?
As i have rough dates of expedition (november 1865).

Annoyingly, Spain and Chile seem to be at war at this period so there are hundreds of mentions of Valparaiso in The Times, but you could trawl through them looking to see if anything jumps out at you!

Think it might have been called Carmona, but no doubt there has been more than one ship of that name.

Google throws up a Camoria in the right period. NB I would have thought that the X of Y would be merchant, not Royal Navy. I don't think RN ships had homes - not really in Liverpool, anyway.

            Thankyou Pheonix

Sounds like it could be, ive just registered with an excellent royal navy history forum and hopefully will have something soon.

Undoubtedly merchant shipping, not Royal Navy. Valparaiso was a noted trading port at that time.

                Ahh should have guessed really.
Do you know of any good sites or forums that may be able to help find my elusive ship?
