        Is this your fellow??

BROADFOOT, William - D14/11/1865 - Killed at sea, on the 14th Nov. last, by a fall from the mizen yard of the ship "Camonia" of Liverpool (bound) for Valparaiso, Mr William Broadfoot, one of the (officers). Deceased was a native of the Isle of Whithorn, and was a (son) of the late Captain William Broadfoot, the well known and highly respected commander of the "Countess of Galloway".

Hi there--I get sidetracked quite easily,:o and while looking for your ship I have come across this link. It is the story of emigration from Liverpool to Australia of a real family-- a diary of sorts--with pictures. It certainly gives a person a better understanding of what our ancestors went through to start a new life away from their homeland--still looking for your ship---

Do you have other references to the name Camonia apart from the newspaper transcription about William Broadfoot's death?

I see he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy reserve as of March 1864 (The Times Digital Archive) so I had thought the Camonia might well be a RN ship. I'm wondering if the Wigtown newspaper spelled it incorrectly?

There's a list of "C" names used by the RN here:

            No Camonia!

I've looked on the National Maritime Museum's database, and nothing on the ship's name which seems unusual if it was R.N.

And even if it wasn't a RN ship, if it was sailing round the world with passengers (and lots of trade ships took passengers too) you would expect to see reports in The Times of arrival and departure dates in the Shipping News, but there's nothing.

And in passing..........Don't get caught out searching for "HMS Whatever" in The Times as it was apparently not the "done thing" to quote ships names in this way. If you were the "right class" to be reading The Times in the first place (lol) then you would know which ships were HMS, wouldn't you?!!! Similarly, my mother saying "Navy" would automatically mean "Royal" and not "Merchant Service" !!! pmsl!

                  Hello

The only reference to the ship i have is from the newspaper reference im afraid, and i too wondered if it were spelt wrong.
Which one was a lieutenant? the one who fell from the mizzen or his father who died in 1864 a commander?

Lieutenant is a low ranking officer, so that would be the son, I would imagine. It was in The Times 22nd March 1864.

BTW - Was there someone called Fletcher who was the father in law of the older William Broadfoot? I was just reading a death notice, with no punctuation in it, which was a bit confusing! lol

Ive been looking for Williams death for ages, i thought he died in Scotland and i was never able to find it, i never thought to check anywhere else.

He died in Liverpool, the only downfall is that on scottish death certs it tells me who his parents were.

I know, you would have thought he would have travelled back to 'Move on' lol.
I know his father was John Fletcher (nail maker) but the mother escapes me.

There were huge numbers of Scottish-born merchant seamen based in Liverpool in the mid-19th. century. My g-g-grandfather (master of my avatar) was Scottish but the Black Ball line (prototype of the Onedin Line) was Liverpool-based.
