        don't think it's watchman because there are no other 'ascenders' (is that the word ?) after the 't'

          He is an omnibus driver in 1881, a porter/cabinet maker in 1891 and a watchman in 1901!

              Watchman tended to be a job for an older person, like he is in 1901.

              I remember my grandad got a job as a watchman after he retired from Esso.
              Can you imagine companies employing old men these days on security? It would be asking for trouble.

                Is Shoreditch in the vicinity of the Thames? Sorry my knowledge of London geography is poor.

                Wouldn't an Omnibus Waterman be someone who worked the river waterbuses?
