  • John Fletcher diary

    Hi all

I posted an image awhile back of an extract of a diary of my rellie from the 1800's in scotland.
Now one of my rellies sent a copy of the diary to Dumfries and Galloway family history society back in november 1989 so they could keep a copy.
Unfortunately she died in 1991 and the society say they cant find it, not exactly great but it has been awhile.
Does anyone know what i can do to find the diary?

    Any help would be great

    I'm confused.

Your relative had a diary. A copy was sent to D&G FHS, and presumably the original was with your rellie who died 1991.

The Society can't find their copy. So what happened to the rellie's estate? Did she leave a Will, who wound up her affairs?

      Hey Nell

Thats all correct, im not sure what happened to her estate as i never met her.
She lived in Rainow Maccesfield. I wish i knew of any family that knew what happened to belongings but i dont

I don't see how they can! You could try checking local newspaper for your relative's death notice to see if it mentions an undertaker and then contact the undertaker who might have records about who arranged the funeral.

I can't think of anything else, sorry.

            Thankyou Nell

I will try the paper as that sounds like an idea

If she left a will you should be able to get a copy with the probate details. This should tell you who wound up the estate and may give other relatives info. It may also detail individual items.

Alternatively, do you think the FHS could have deposited them with the local archives? It might be worth checking
