  • Does anyone know Ilkley?

I'm researching an Edward Dunn (bc1873, Aldborough) and have found him working as a confectioners apprentice in Brook Street, Ilkley in 1891. It appears he is working for a Wiliam Johnson.

What I am trying to find out is:

    1) What is the name of the Confectioners?

    2) Where on Brook Street would the Confectioners have been located?

    3) Is anybody able to get me a picture of the property (if it's still there) either past or present or both?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Try the Historical Directories to see if you can get the number of the shop.

Ilkley has a moor, that's all I know.

I don't know if you would find out much online, you could google "Brook Street" Ilkley history or something.

But I guess the info would be at the relevant local history centre/archives.

              John

Excuse me for stating the obvious perhaps, but maybe they lived "over the shop". A confectioner didn't need much more than a sugar boiler and a big table.

Mary & Little Nell, Many thanks for the suggestions but I haven't been able to find anything in those places.

Believe it or not, I lived there when I was a midget but never ventured further than my part of the river. Definitely not up to Brook Street. If only I knew I was going to get into this genealogy malarkey I would have made some notes at the time. ;)

Daphne, I was wondering who would be the first to start singing that - LOL !! :D

OC, Yes, I am thinking along the lines of them living over the shop.

Thank you everyone, I will keep looking.

According to Google there's a Johnson's bar/café at 31 Brook Street. You could try contacting them to see if they know the history of the place.

I've been to Ilkley, but it was a very long time ago, and I don't remember Brook Street at all.

Wow! Mary, that's great! How did I miss that! Must be too much looking and not enough seeing, if you understand what I mean. I will get on to them and see what they say. Many thanks! :D

I reckon that might be the right address.

Do you know the Gale site?

A beer and wine licence was granted to Mr W.A. Johnston of Brook Street, Ikley, confectioner, on 31 August 1888.

The Leeds Mercury (Leeds, England), Saturday, September 1, 1888; Issue 15727.

I didn't know that site. Thank you again Mary. I've added it to my favourites and will register with them a little later.

Hi Mary, A little help please.

I've got into the Gale site. Could you tell me what route you took to get the "beer and wine licence" information please?

                              Choose British Newspapers 1600-1900.

I tried various searches - can't remember in which order.

Johnson AND Ilkley AND "Brook Street"

                              Johnson AND Ilkley AND confectioner

                              Johnson AND Ilkley

and I substituted Johnston for Johnson a couple of times.

In addition to the beer and wine licence, there are some ads placed by him for a lad to help out in the confectionery shop, and the bankruptcy of a grocery business at a different address.

Thanks for that little sing song Geordie girl. Got me humming that now. Used to sing it with my granddad who brought me up speaking Yorkshire dialect.
