  • Can someone look at this please.

Following on from Mary's Google thread.......I've found this..

: With an Appendix of Lancashire and ... - Google Book Search

    Hope it works.

Does anyone know where I might find these wills. I've tried Cheshire Wills Online, but no Sawreys come up on their search.

    Thanks.

Sorry.....I meant the one for Anthony Sawrey 1624. The others I know about.

According to the 'find a library' link, they can be located in
      1. Corporation of London Libraries London, EC2P 2EJ United Kingdom

      Book
      Services: Library Information

      2. Glasgow University Library Glasgow, G12 8QE United Kingdom

Services: Library Information Ask a librarian

      3. London Library London, SW1Y 4LG United Kingdom

      6. University of Leeds Leeds, LS2 9JT United Kingdom

I notice Glasgow has 'ask a librarian 'service, so perhaps if you email them, they can give you further details. I did this once with an article that was held in Victoria State Library and they were very helpful

You need to get access to the book to find out through which court those wills were proved.

If you click on the link, top right, "Find this book in a library" you will see there are quite a few places in the UK that hold a copy.

Next you email them all! lol

Looks as though Lancs Record Office have it, although it says in the snippet that it was proved at York:

          FILE - [no title] - ref. RCHY 2/3/70 - date: 1622/3 28 Jan
          Contents
Will of Anthony Sawrey of Plumpton, Ulverston

OK Thank you....I clicked the "find a library" link and it told me it couldn't find the page.

Mary....Lancs hasn't got it on their list. I just got a few from them. There are some Anthonys...just not that one.

            Looks like I'll start emailing.

                        Great minds

Might be worth trying Lancs RO again, but this time quote the A2A reference number and tell them to search among the Hornby Catholic Mission Papers.

                            Libby

A bit late now, but I don't think the Lancs Wills List on the Lancs RO site is complete.

They only include in that list, Wills which they hold as their property, if you see what I mean, not always Wills which appear in collections of papers.

Their cataloguing leaves a bit to be desired, I have found. I now always quote the DX nbumber, as found on A2A, as some of their clerks don't seem able to find a document without that number.

Thanks OC.......as it was last night (my time) I got a call that dragged me (kicking and screaming) away from computer, so will email today.

This family is proving painful, in that it seems I will have to research every member before I can put them in order. Every generation has exactly the same names so there can be half a dozen Myles all born around the same time, then half a dozen, Williams, Davids, Janes, Anthonys, etc. Of course all the parents have similar names as well!!!

What makes it fun is that some are Catholic, some Quakers, and some just use the parish church. One family has the daughters baptised in the local church (Cof E), but found from the will that the father refused to "have his sons sprinkled".

I know the feeling! I started my family history all those years ago, just going to do the direct ancestoirs, nothing else, and here I am 40 years later with information on 5000 or more Holdens going back to the year dot.

Although it strictly isn't the way to do it, I now go right back and work forwards as it is easier (in my opinion) when you have a complicated family.

                                  Thank you OC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep telling myself "work back from what you know" then find that impossible.

Now I'm working any way I can. LOL. At least they get their names printed a lot. Google books seems to be my best bet so far.

I can give you most of the spouses, children, in-laws, etc.......just no idea where they fit together. LOL.
